November 1 – December 15
Identify Upcoming Changes to Your Healthcare Plan
If you are enrolled in a plan this year that will be available in the upcoming year, and choose to do nothing, you will automatically be re-enrolled in the same plan on January 1.
You may receive a notice from your current health insurance company outlining changes such as:
- An increase to your monthly premium
- Possible discontinuation of your current health plan
- Changes to coverage and benefits like deductibles, copays, and annual maximum amounts
- Adjustments of provider networks and participating physicians
Update Your Healthcare.gov Application
If you applied for or are renewing your coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace, you need to provide updates to information about you and your household, including:
- Information about your household size and who will be covered
- Your current home address, telephone number, and email address
- An estimate of what your expected household income will be for the upcoming year and confirmation of any tax credits (premium subsidies)
- Which plan you would like to enroll in for the upcoming year
Special Enrollment Periods
If you decide to enroll between November 1 and December 15, your coverage will take effect on January 1. If you miss the enrollment deadline, you may not have another chance to enroll in coverage until the following year.
Exceptions to this would be if you experience a “qualifying life event” mid-year, which may include:
- Marriage or divorce
- Having a baby
- Moving to an area where your current plan is not available
- Losing other coverage like COBRA, Medicaid, or employer-sponsored health coverage
- Turning 26 and no longer eligible to be covered under your parent’s plan
You will need to make changes within 60-days of your qualifying life event.
